Vintage Quillwork Box with Rose

American Indian Artist

Rare and exquisite vintage quillwork box with white background and large beautiful red rose.

Made by softening actual porcupine quills in the mouth of the talented women that make these.  The quills are then dyed and carefully applied to bark boxes, bags, and other objects.

Quillwork was the traditional embellishment used by many American Indian groups prior to the introduction of glass seed beads by fur traders over 300 years ago. The ease of use and bright colors of the beads put quill decoration into the realm of a dying craft.

Ruby uses this lovely box on her vanity, it holds her most precious jewels.  She gave a matching one with a Deer on it to her love, George. He has been bow hunting in the forests of the Northwest since childhood and it reminds him of those innocent and spiritual days.
