Rare and exquisite vintage quillwork box with blue and white background and large beautiful deer decorating the top.
Made by softening actual porcupine quills in the mouth of the talented women that make these. The quills are then dyed and carefully applied to bark boxes, bags, and other objects.
Quillwork was the traditional embellishment used by many American Indian groups prior to the introduction of glass seed beads by fur traders over 300 years ago. The ease of use and bright colors of the beads put quill decoration into the realm of a dying craft.Ruby gave this to George as a gift. He was taught archery by his Grandfather and together they bow hunted deer like this in the Northwest throughout his childhood. He keeps objects of memories in this box...
