Vintage Geometric Quillwork Box

American Indian Artist

Rare and exquisite vintage quillwork box with intricate geometric star top with radiating and striped sides.

Made by softening actual porcupine quills in the mouth of the talented women that make these.  The quills are then dyed and carefully applied to bark boxes, bags, and other objects. In this case earth tones were applied to the quills to focus your eye on the geometric design of this box.

Quillwork was the traditional embellishment used by many American Indian groups prior to the introduction of glass seed beads by fur traders over 300 years ago. The ease of use and bright colors of the beads put quill decoration into the realm of a dying craft.

Ruby gave this to George as a gift. He was taught archery by his Grandfather and together they bow hunted deer like this in the Northwest throughout his childhood.  He keeps objects of memories in this box...
