Large Sand Painting- Mother Earth
Large 1 foot square Sand Painting with Mother Earth in center (Yellow Yei Figure) on Beige Background. Artist name and address on back, Wilson Price of New Mexico, circa 1970-80's. Ready to hang with wire securely attached.
Sand paintings come from traditions of the Navajo, used in healing. The medicine man would come to the home of the ill and during a 2 day ceremony he would use colored sands to draw the appropriate symbols and figures, who are summoned to help. The beautiful patterns and compositions produced are always destroyed at the end of the ceremony, but they have influenced both Navajo weavings, like Yei rugs, and these wall hangings. The exact medicinal designs are prohibited from being preserved as in the artistic version you see offered on R+G, but the healing Yei figures (their gods/helping spirits) are what you see on these.
