Large Antique Yei Navajo Tapestry Wall Hanging 6'11" x 3'10"

Navajo Artist

Large Antique Navajo Rug in Yei Pictorial style from Lukachukai weaving region of the Navajo Nation, famous for this type of design.

46" x 71"

Beautiful natural grey ground with dramatic Rainbow Yeibichai surrounding the four standing figures of masked warriors, parading in ceremonial regalia for their yearly healing ritual. They carry staffs of feathers and adorn themselves with earrings and necklaces of their finest jewelry.

Bright orange aniline dye was used for the wool in some of skirts, shirts, and even in the legs of one of the figures.  This color has not run or faded, quite rare indeed.  The detail is incredible, especially being these are made from memory without any plans or drawings.  From the feathers on their heads, to their shapely calves and stunning condition.

The designs for these weaving come from sacred sand paintings that are destroyed after each use.  At first they were frowned upon when woven into permanent rugs such as these by the medicine men that practice this ancient religion.  The maker will often include a spirit line on the border of the tapestry so that any sacred energy can escape.

This rug is so precious it is usually only hung up.  The back side shows a strip of linen that has been added for secure attachment to the wall.

George's parents always displayed this masterpiece in their family room and he hopes to do the same in the home he makes with Ruby...
